
National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC)
NRASTC is a supervision and rescue award for swimming teachers, coaches and (or) instructors working during programmed activities, such as swimming lessons. It is developed by the RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society) and is suitable for teachers working in a wide range of swimming pools where the water depth is higher than the teachers’ standing depth and meets the individual facility’s Risk Assessment.
If you are a swimming teacher, coach or instructor working during programmed sessions such as swimming lessons then this is the course for you.
Depending on your centre's risk assessment this course can allow you to provide safety cover for swimming lessons and other programmed aquatic activities.
This qualification is suitable for teachers working in a range of pools including those deeper than the teachers standing depth.

How long does it last?
A NRASTC course lasts 2 years.
If you would like to renew your NRASTC course you will need to have attended 6 hours of ongoing training and competency assessment.
This can be achieved by attending ongoing NRASTC / lifeguard training and competency assessment
Attending alternative training, face to face or online which relates to in water rescue skills, CPR, First Aid and NRASTC / lifeguard theory.
If you have completed sufficient ongoing training then you will be eligible for renewal.

Course Prerequisites
16 years of age on date of assessment
Swim a minimum of 50 metres on your front and back
Surface dive to the deepest part of the assessment pool
Climb out unaided without using the steps or ladders (where venue design permits)
Course Content
The NRASTC course is 14 hours and deliverable over 2 days.

The teacher, swimming pool and class management
Intervention rescue
Emergency Action
CPR and First Aid
How will I be assessed?
The assessment is a formal assessment consisting of a combination of practical test and verbal questioning.
